About
The UNISON Manweb Branch includes all members who work for ScottishPower and
associated companies in the Merseyside and North Wales (Manweb) area.
The majority of members are concentrated in the two call centres in Warrington
and Wrexham. There are also a number of members in the Prenton and Queensferry
offices as well as groups of members scattered amongst smaller offices and
workplaces from Aberystwyth to Liverpool.
All the main workplaces are represented by elected
stewards, who are trained by
the union to represent members and negotiate on your behalf alongside the
union’s full time officers. If there is no steward in your location then you may
wish to consider putting yourself forward.
The Branch Officers, elected at the
Annual meeting each year are responsible,
along with the stewards for the day to day running of the branch. Every six
weeks the officers and stewards meet at the Branch Committee to
oversee the administration and management of union activity and discuss the key
issues and policies affecting members.
The branch shares an office with United Utilities Branch in Birchwood. The
office handles all post, maintains branch records, keeps minutes of meetings,
deals with phone calls, arranges bookings and provides key administrative
assistance to the elected Branch Secretary. For contact details see our contacts
page.
Our branch has played an important role over many years in campaigning for the
interests of our members and fighting to retain a strong and effective presence
in the workplace. It is a testimony to the hard work of many stewards, officers
and particularly members that we continue to represent the overwhelming majority
of the office-based workforce.
Since the privatisation of the Electricity Industry in 1990 we have faced many
challenges including the takeover by ScottishPower, the breakdown into business
units and business bargaining, integration of terms and conditions with
colleagues in Scotland, outsourcing of jobs and businesses, off-shoring of work
to India and the merger with Iberdola in 2007. Yet throughout this period
UNISON has always sought to protect jobs, and the terms and conditions of
members as far as possible and working alongside other recognised trade unions
has achieved many successes.
We will only be able to maintain our influence and strength through the
continued support of existing members and by recruiting new members who are
prepared to struggle to the same extent as those who have gone before. We
welcome you to UNISON and encourage you to not just join the union
but to take
part in the activities, attend meetings, speak up and be heard and make sure
your union is fighting for you.
